Traben-Trarbach is a charming town nestled in Germany’s Mosel Valley. Once Europe’s largest wine-exporting city after Bordeaux, this picturesque destination offers a blend of history, culture, and stunning natural beauty.
Having made Traben-Trarbach one of our home bases during our Moselle Valley adventure, I can confidently say it quickly became my personal favorite among the region’s many enchanting destinations.
Things to Do in Traben-Trarbach
Make the most of your visit to Traben-Trarbach with these insider tips.
Admire the Art Nouveau Architecture of the Brockentor City Gate
The Brockentor, a historic city gate connecting Traben and Trarbach, is a stunning example of Art Nouveau architecture. Brought to Traben-Trarbach by the Berlin architect Bruno Möhring, the Brockentor showcases the elegance and innovation of this artistic movement. It’s one of Möhring’s most notable contributions to the region, leaving a lasting impression on the town.
As you cross the Brockentor, take a moment to admire the picturesque views of the Mosel River and the surrounding vineyards.
Go on a wine tour at Richard Bocking
Richard Bocking is a renowned winery located in Traben-Trarbach, offering guided tours of its underground cellars and tasting rooms. These tours provide a unique opportunity to learn about the winemaking process, sample the winery’s exceptional Riesling wines, and discover the history of the region’s wine industry.
See the city views from Grevenburg Castle
For a breathtaking view of Traben-Trarbach and the surrounding Mosel Valley, venture to the ruins of Grevenburg Castle. This medieval fortress, dating back to 1350, offers a glimpse into the region’s history.
After centuries of relative peace, the castle became embroiled in the European Wars of the 17th century. It was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times, changing hands between various powers, including the Spaniards, Swedes, French, and even the Netherlands. Despite these tumultuous times, the castle’s strategic importance remained evident.
You can reach the castle on foot or by car. The hike up is a rewarding experience, offering stunning vistas along the way. However, if you prefer a more leisurely ascent, driving is a convenient option especially during the summer months. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views that stretch as far as the eye can see.
Have Afternoon Tea at Kaffeehaus Alte Ratsschänk
Take a break from your explorations and enjoy afternoon tea at Kaffeehaus Alte Rattschänke. This charming café is housed in a historic 17th-century building, featuring rustic decor and antique treasures.
Treat yourself to their delicious cakes and pastries, like the amazing strawberry cheesecake with its unique gingerbread crust. The friendly staff will make you feel right at home.
Dine at Alte Zunftschuene: A Cozy Gem
Our first night in Traben, we had the pleasure of dining at Alte Zunftschuene, a charming and cozy restaurant with a rustic interior. Filled with antiques and paintings of the Mosel Valley, the decor creates a warm and inviting atmosphere.
The restaurant offers a delicious selection of classic German dishes with a modern twist. Pair your meal with a glass of Mosel wine for a truly authentic experience. Be sure to take a tour of the restaurant to appreciate its unique ambiance.
A hidden gem of the restaurant is its beautiful outdoor terrace, perfect for enjoying a meal on a warm summer day. Due to its popularity, we recommend making a reservation to ensure a table.
