Mechelen, Belgium, might not be the first city that comes to mind when planning a European trip, but it absolutely deserves a spot on your travel list. Getting to Mechelen
Mechelen is incredibly accessible by train, bus, or car. If you’re traveling by train, it’s well-connected to major Belgian and European cities. The city has two main train stations: Mechelen and Mechelen-Nekkerspoel, making it super convenient for visitors.
By Car: If you’re arriving by car, note that most of the city center is a restricted traffic zone between 11 AM and 6 PM. There are plenty of parking options on the outskirts with easy walking routes into the heart of the city.

1. Visit Saint Rumbold’s Cathedral and Climb the Tower

After conquering the 538 steps, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of Mechelen and, on a clear day, even catch a glimpse of Brussels and Antwerp.
2. Snap a Photo with Opsinjoorke – The Iconic Yellow Statue
Right near Saint Rumbold’s Cathedral, you’ll find the bright yellow Opsinjoorke statue, a quirky and beloved symbol of Mechelen. The figure represents a character from local folklore—a mischievous drunkard being tossed into the air by a rescue cloth, traditionally used to discipline troublemakers at festivals. The original puppet dates back to the 18th century, but this cheerful statue serves as a fun and unique photo spot. It’s a little piece of Mechelen’s history that both locals and visitors love.
3. Explore the Museum Hof van Busleyden
This city palace-turned-museum is a captivating window into Mechelen’s rich history and artistic heritage. We spent over three hours wandering its grand halls, completely immersed in the stories of the past. The Museum Hof van Busleyden takes you deep into the prosperous era of the Burgundians, showcasing northern Renaissance art in all its glory. You’ll dive into the worlds of:
- Hieronymus van Busleyden – the palace’s original owner.
- Grande Dame Margareta of Austria V – a key historical figure.
- The Modest Hospital Sisters – who left a lasting impact on Mechelen.
Tip: Don’t miss the redesigned museum gardens. Inspired by opulent Renaissance designs, they’re the perfect spot to relax and soak in the history.
4. Stroll Along the Dijlepad (Dyle Path)
One of the most peaceful and scenic ways to explore Mechelen is by walking along the Dijlepad, a floating pathway over the River Dijle. We loved wandering this route—it’s an easy, enjoyable walk that takes you past charming cafés, hidden courtyards, and beautiful houses lining the canal. What makes it even better? The pathway connects different parts of the city, letting you explore Mechelen from a unique canal-side perspective. It’s perfect for a leisurely stroll, snapping photos, or simply soaking in the atmosphere.
5. Beer with the Locals: Anker Brewery, De Gouden Vis & Café De Wei
For an authentic Mechelen experience, you have to grab a beer with the locals.
Anker Brewery
This is one of Belgium’s oldest breweries, dating back to the 15th century, and it’s a cornerstone of Mechelen’s brewing heritage. Known worldwide for its iconic Gouden Carolus beers, this family-run brewery has masterfully combined tradition and innovation over centuries. My absolute favorite? The whiskey-infused Carolus—but fair warning, it’s strong! My close seconds are the Triple and Amber varieties.
De Gouden Vis
A true local favorite, De Gouden Vis is a charming bar set right along the water. It’s the perfect place to unwind, whether you’re enjoying a beer inside the warmly lit interior or sitting by the canal on a sunny day. The relaxed, inviting vibe makes it a go-to spot for both locals and visitors alike.
Café De Wei
This laid-back café has an old-school charm, friendly service, and a great selection of beers. Whether you’re in the mood for a quiet drink or looking to soak up the casual atmosphere, Café De Wei is an excellent place to experience Mechelen’s social scene.
6. The Art Hour – A Unique Exhibit Experience
This was hands down one of my favorite museum experiences—ever. The Art Hour takes art appreciation to another level. Here’s what makes it so special:
- Unique lighting and a custom-composed soundtrack create a magical, emotional journey.
- Masterpieces from 1850-1950 are showcased.
- Each artwork has a personal narration from a well-known Flemish figure or celebrity.
I left the exhibit with a deeper understanding of the artists, their stories, and the emotions behind their work. Honestly, every art museum should offer an experience like this.
7. Experience the Vleeshal Food Hall
If you’re a foodie, you cannot miss the Vleeshal. Originally a medieval meat hall where butchers sold their goods, this historic space has transformed into a lively food market with a variety of food stands serving everything from local Belgian specialties to international cuisine.
We had such a great time here—sampling different foods, discovering new flavors, and just soaking up the fun, casual atmosphere. It’s also a great spot to grab a drink and hang out with friends while enjoying the bustling market vibes.
