Located on California’s central coast halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles is this lovely beach town. If you’re driving down Highway 101 you have to get off and experience Pismo Beach. From vineyards, impressive beaches and tasty food there are countless things to do. Come any season since the weather is friendly enough for you to visit anytime during the year. It is the perfect getaway so here is what you must experience in Pismo Beach.

Monarch Butterfly Grove

Amongst a number of Eucalyptus trees located off Highway 1 is this fascinating sight to see. A butterfly grove containing thousands of Monarch Butterflies clustered together on branches. During the wintertime they seek shelter from the cold making their way from as far as Canada to California or sometimes Mexico. That is nearly a 2,000 mile journey these butterflies are making but it’s because they find that the coastal environment suits them perfectly.

Dinosaur Caves Park

If you want to take in a view of Pismo beach beautiful coastline then you must visit Dinosaur Caves Park. While it’s great for kids as their is a friendly playground. The great attraction is that this park is located right on top a bluff overlooking the ocean. Have a picnic and enjoy the view or find the hidden staircase and make yourself to the beach area to explore the rock formations and caves.

From the name of the park alone you may be asking, ‘where are the supposed dinosaurs located’? Dinosaur Caves park initially got its name from a man named H. Douglas Brown. He constructed a tall Brontosaurus as part of a tourist attraction that could be seen from the highway. Unfortunately, this 50 foot dinosaur obstructed the views of the neighbors and the locals had it taken down. So while you may not be able to see a dinosaur statue you can come for the breathtaking views alone.

You must Experience the Beach

The most popular spot in Pismo has to be the state beach. Stroll along the pier, see a beautiful sunset, have a bonfire or watch surfers catch some waves. Walking on the beach was my personal favorite because it’s so flat, soft and wide that you can easily walk and have fun outdoor activities.

The Sand Dunes!

These are some of the largest Coastal dunes we have left in California and such a fun area to explore in Pismo.. Take advantage of this as there are many activities to do in this preserve. Did you know that this is one of the few places where you can drive your car directly on the beach? You can also go by ATV and Dune buggies as there are many companies that will let you rent them. I even think horseback riding would be such a great adventure.

Visit Downtown Pismo Beach

Looking for somewhere to grab a bite, have a drink or find what to do tonight? Head to Downtown Pismo beach! From restaurants, bars, shopping or watching a movie, you have so many options to choose from.
