Have you ever thought about relocating to the Netherlands? Although small, this beautiful country has so much to offer. And this is why the Netherlands is one of the top destinations for foreigners to migrate to. Having previously lived in three countries, and being from Los Angeles, I find the rich history, cycling as a way of life and multi-cultural environment appealing. Honestly, I can rant on about the specifics so instead, let’s break it down into the 5 reasons to move to the Netherlands.
Excellent Organization and Efficiency
The Dutch are very pragmatic and efficient with work, processes and you name it. For instance, the bureaucratic process is pretty straightforward and streamlined. If I have any questions for the Gemeente or IND, employees are friendly and helpful. If I’m unable to find an answer to my problem, someone will gladly refer me to another colleague who does. Another example is the public transport system, which is consistent, reliable and always on time. The OV-Chipcard system is genius and I appreciate the accessibility of central stations from any city. I’ve never had such a great experience with public transit until I first visited the Netherlands.
The Standard of Living
I find that factors such as healthcare, education, the quality of food and cleanliness is much better to other countries I’ve lived in such as the US and France. Food and produce are fresh and many times stem from our own backyard/Dutch countryside. The Dutch are also very mindful of the environment and push for sustainable living. There are plenty of parks and green spaces and city planning makes sure to put an emphasis due to the lack of space. Public spaces are pretty clean, maintained and trash is regularly collected Littering is also a hefty fine so it makes sense as to why places and infrastructure are clean.
One of the Happiest Countries To Live In
The Netherlands is continuously listed as one of the happiest countries to live in. And you can see this exemplified in its people because the Dutch are generally quite happy and laidback. This is mainly due to the quality of life and what the country and government offer them.
You Can Nearly Bike Anywhere
Instead of spending 30 minutes in traffic to get to the store 10 minutes from your house, you can take your bike. And guarantee this will get you there in half the time or sooner. Biking in the Netherlands is a way of life and a major part of Dutch culture. Not only can you arrive at your destination faster, but it’s more economical and healthy! The bike culture is one of the top reasons to move to the Netherlands.
The Transition to Move Here May be Easier Than Other Countries
The biggest hurdle that comes to mind is learning Dutch. However, many Dutch people speak a good amount of English so communicating should not be an issue, especially in the cities. You can easily live here without speaking Dutch, although learning the language will help with better integration. There is also a large expat community where you can always connect or meet up with others when missing home. This is the why reason, why I think life in the Netherlands as a foreigner, is great!
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, the Netherlands is a wonderful place to live. It’s not the most perfect place in the world but it does come pretty close to it.
